Bora Bora is an island in the Leeward groups of the Society Island of French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France in the Pacific Ocean. The original name of the island in the Tahitian languge might be better renderef as Pora Pora, meaning "first born".
An early transcription found in 18th and 19th century accountsm is Bolabolla or BollaBolla. The island locater about 230 kilometers northwest og papeete, is surrounded bu a lagoon anf a barrier reef. In the center of the islanf are the remnants of an extinct volcano rising to two peaks, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, the highest point at 727 meters.
Bora Bora is a major international tourist destinationm famous for its aqua-centric luxury resorts. the island is served by Bora-Bora Airport on Motu Mete in the north, settlementmVaitape is on the western side of the main islang, opposite the main channel into lagoon. Today the island is mainly dependent on tourism. over the last view years several resorts have been bult on motu (small islands) surrounding the lagoon. Thirty year ago, Hotel Bora Bora built the first over-the-water bungalows on stilts over the lagoon and today, those bungalows ranges from comparablu cheaom basic accomodations to cery luxurious and expensive place to stay. Most of hte tourist destinatons are aquacentric,. However it is possible to visit attractions on land such as WWII cannons. Air Tahiti has five or six flight daily to the Bora Bora Airpotr on Motu Mute from Tahiti.
Although French and Tahitian are the main languages spoken by inhabitants, people in contact with tourists generally have some command of English. Most visitoes to Bora Bora are American, Japanese, or European. Public transport on the islanf is non existent. Rental cars and bicycles for hire vaitape. Snorkeling and scuba diving in and around lagoon of Bora Bora are popular activities. Many species of sharks and raus inhabit the surrounding body water. There are a few dive operators on the islan offering manta ray dives and also shark-feeding dives.
